Capability and Capacity

Attracting and developing a diverse workforce is a key objective for government and industry to successfully deliver the infrastructure pipeline and create a more sustainable industry. With a shortage of key resources in delivering projects, we also need to find ways to improve productivity – i.e. to do more with less.

The Construction Industry Leadership Forum Capability and Capacity Workstream is targeting a multilayered approach to increase the skilled workforce, attract more people to the industry and improve productivity.

Outputs

Leadership: Leadership is key to achieving successful project outcomes. More inclusive and agile leadership skills are needed to manage the increasingly complex projects coming to market. To support this, the Construction Industry Leadership Forum is developing strategies to improve project leadership training for both client and contractor teams, targeting both existing and emerging leaders.

Skills: The Construction Industry Leadership Forum supports the joint Australian Constructors Association and Engineers Australia initiative to raise the standard of engineers in the construction industry. This initiative has produced an engineering competency framework and a Chartered Area of Practice specifically aimed at engineers in the construction industry.

More information can be found on the Australian Constructors Association Construction Engineer Learning and Development Guide. The Construction Industry Leadership Forum is also exploring opportunities for public and private sector construction professionals to engage together in a learning environment to assist in understanding client, consultant and contractor points of view and build networks.

Industry attraction campaign: If the industry is to deliver the unprecedented infrastructure pipeline it needs to attract more people. There are many useful resources in existence, and the Construction Industry Leadership Forum will build on these to map career paths, with a target audience of women in the construction industry.
